PSC Praises Louisville Energy Conservation Volunteers – King Day weatherization blitz is part of national effort
January 16, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) is praising the efforts of volunteers who will spend part of the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday weatherizing the homes of about 50 elderly and disabled Louisville residents.
“I can think of no better way to honor Dr. King’s legacy,” said PSC Chairman David Armstrong. “His challenge to all Americans was to improve our society, especially by reaching out to those who might need a helping hand.”
Monday’s weatherization event is being held in conjunction with the nationwide Anybody Can Serve…So Let’s Conserve campaign initiated by the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). The Kentucky PSC is a member of NARUC.
The Louisville event is being conducted by Project Warm, which holds similar events throughout the year. The event includes a free energy management workshop. (Detailed information about the event follows this news release.)
“The PSC thanks Project Warm for its participation in Anybody Can Serve,” PSC Vice Chairman Jim Gardner said. “Efforts such as this will help develop awareness and broaden participation in energy conservation.”
In addition to inviting Project Warm to participate in Anybody Can Serve, the PSC is encouraging all Kentuckians to participate in their own ways.
“Even if it’s something as simple as putting in an energy-efficient light bulb or turning off the TV in an empty room, each one of us can make a contribution,” PSC Commissioner John Clay said. “We all consume energy, so we all can conserve energy.”
NARUC established Anybody Can Serve to broaden outreach and education efforts aimed at teaching consumers how to conserve energy. The name of the campaign is drawn from a sermon Dr. King delivered in 1968, in which he said “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.”
In 1994, Congress established the King holiday as a national day of community service. While NARUC’s Anybody Can Serve campaign begins Monday, it is planned as an ongoing effort.
“We hope to find or develop further opportunities to participate in Anybody Can Serve in the future,” PSC Chairman Armstrong said. “There is a real need to extend the reach of energy conservation programs into all segments of society.
“NARUC has recognized that need and is working to address it through Anybody Can Serve,” he said. “The Kentucky PSC plans to be a partner in that effort.”
The PSC is an independent agency attached for administrative purposes to the Energy and Environment Cabinet. It regulates more than 1,500 gas, water, sewer, electric and telecommunication utilities operating in Kentucky and has approximately 100 employees.
