Governor Beshear announces grant to enhance Public Safety in Dover

FRANKFORT, KY – March 16, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Gov. Steve Beshear today announced the award of a Community Block Development Grant (CBDG) to the city of Dover that will enhance public safety for the Mason County community.

The grant, totaling $500,000, will aid in the construction of a fire station to house the Dover Volunteer Fire Department. The new 4,800 square foot facility will provide three double bays for six fire trucks, a multipurpose training room, bathrooms and a warming kitchen.

“The construction of the Volunteer Fire Department station allows residents of Dover and the surrounding areas to more rapidly receive necessary emergency response services,” said Gov. Beshear. “The new centralized location of the facility will enhance the department’s ability to quickly mobilize to assist residents in case of an emergency, enhancing public safety and ensuring greater peace of mind for city residents.”

Due to the inadequacies of the current fire station, all resources and equipment cannot be housed in one central location, with some equipment currently stored in the barns and garages of firefighters. Currently, when a fire run is dispatched, the volunteer firefighters must drive to the remote locations to get the needed equipment. The lack of a central operations station results in unorganized and lengthy response times. The new fire station will be centrally located in Dover, and will provide the volunteer fire department a location to house all of their equipment and resources.

“The volunteer firefighters of Dover are responsible for serving 368 homes within the Dover city limits and the surrounding area,” said Commissioner Wilder. “Each year, the fire department responds to approximately 80 calls and is called upon for back-up services by surrounding local fire departments. The new, centrally located fire station will significantly enhance their ability to serve a community in need.”

“This project is extremely important to the safety and well being of the citizens of Dover and western Mason County.  Many people have worked very hard to achieve this project and I appreciate their effort.  I especially appreciate Governor Beshear and Commissioner Wilder for their help and guidance and for funding this project,” said Rep. Mike Denham.

“I recognize and appreciate the Dover Volunteer Fire Department for its demonstrated dedication and service to the community,” said Sen. Robin Webb. “I am happy to see this project proceed for the security and safety of Mason County citizens.”

The city of Dover will continue to provide funding from the city budget for utilities and operational costs.
