WASHINGTON, D.C. – August 3, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Energy and Power Subcommittee Chairman Ed Whitfield (KY-01) issued the following statement after the Obama administration announced final rules to regulate carbon dioxide (C02) from new and existing power plants, also known as the “Clean Power Plan.”
“This rule is nothing more than a backdoor cap and trade policy executed through an unprecedented power grab by the EPA under the Clean Air Act. The finalization of these regulations will shutter more power plants across the nation, double down against affordable energy and the reliability of our grid, and deal a major blow to jobs and the economy.
“The president has made it clear that he alone knows what’s best for our country and has repeatedly circumvented Congress and the American people to achieve his agenda. He views climate change as the number one issue facing mankind and a legacy item he will pursue at any cost. I disagree and will continue our efforts in the House to invalidate this rule.”
In June, the House passed bipartisan legislation, H.R. 2042, the Ratepayer Protection Act. The bill would allow the courts to review any final C02 rule issued for existing power plants before requiring states to comply, and would also ensure that states could protect ratepayers from significant adverse effects on electricity rates and reliability.
