The Louisville Scholar House will assist Kentuckians as they pursue an education

October 17, 2008 – (RealEstateRama) — A grand opening of the new Louisville Scholar House was held October 7 with representatives of Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC), University of Louisville, Family Scholar House (formerly Project Women), Marian Development Group and state and local officials.  This new initiative will provide affordable housing, counseling and on-site childcare for individuals who are pursuing post-secondary education.  The Louisville Scholar House is the second to open in the state.

“Without the security of affordable housing, parents cannot focus on improving their lives not just for themselves, but for their children,” said Richard L. McQuady, interim chief executive officer of Kentucky Housing Corporation.  “This development will allow unemployed and underemployed parents to have a safe, decent place for their families to live, while they strive to become self-sufficient.”

The Louisville Scholar House has benefitted from a special gift of one million dollars from Lewis “Sonny” Bass and his wife, Gladys, to celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary by helping other Kentuckians improve their lives.  Scholar House is a housing and education initiative, and KHC administers the development of each facility and each facility’s compliance with program guidelines after opening.  Participants in Scholar House attend workshops on health maintenance, parenting skills, management of family resources, nutritional knowledge, problem solving, work skills and job-search techniques, in addition to their academic or vocational classes.  They also receive continuous support from neighbors and staff while fulfilling academic or vocational training course work as a full-time student.

Each development in the Scholar House program includes an on-site childcare facility to allow time for parents to attend classes and focus on their education.  All of these services are free as long as the participant is a full-time student and remains within program guidelines.  The Louisville Scholar House includes 56 units covering over 60 thousand square feet.

This transitional housing will only be available to residents participating in the program and their children.  Once residents have graduated from Scholar House, they will be allowed ample time to find and move into permanent housing.

Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC), created by the 1972 General Assembly, is a self-supporting, public corporation of the Commonwealth of Kentucky administratively attached to the Finance and Administration Cabinet.  A portion of Kentucky Housing's funds are derived from the interest earned through the sale of tax-exempt mortgage revenue bonds.

From these proceeds, Kentucky Housing has made homeownership possible for over 82,000 Kentucky families.  Kentucky Housing also operates through the receipt of fees for administering federal programs including rental assistance that makes safe, decent, affordable housing available to more than 27,000 low-income Kentuckians.
