Greenup Co. Site Will Be Fourth State Veterans Cemetery
FRANKFORT, KY – August 11, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Governor Steve Beshear announced today that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded a grant of $6.1 million to the Commonwealth to establish Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East in Greenup.
“We are grateful for the hard work of Rep. Tanya Pullin, Sen. Charlie Borders and the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs in locating the right property for this cemetery and obtaining the federal grant,” Gov. Beshear said.
The 78-acre property is located on East Park Drive off Highway 67 and Industrial Parkway off I-64 in Greenup County. Governor Beshear will break ground on the new cemetery in a ceremony at the site on September 18.
Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East will ultimately contain 25,000 gravesites for veterans from Kentucky, western West Virginia and southeastern Ohio. The project will include at 3,600 square-foot administration building and a 4,400 square-foot equipment storage and maintenance building, with service area, committal facility and a columbarium, as well as appropriate parking, road network, walking path and landscaping commensurate with the dignity and honor for a state veteran’s cemetery.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs grant will cover construction and initial equipment purchase for Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast. The Commonwealth of Kentucky will pay for continuing operation and maintenance.
The Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs currently operates three state veterans cemeteries. Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West opened in Hopkinsville in 2004, Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central opened in Radcliff in 2007, and Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North opened in Williamstown in 2008. KDVA is currently seeking land in Leslie County on which to build Kentucky Veterans Cemetery South East.
