April is Fair Housing Month in Kentucky

April 7, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights joins the Local Human Rights Commissions of Kentucky and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to highlight efforts to fight housing discrimination and promote inclusive, diverse communities.

Kentucky this month celebrates the US Fair Housing Act and the Kentucky Fair Housing Act. Both became law in April 1968. Kentucky was the first state south of the Mason Dixon Line to have its own Fair Housing Act. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear recently signed a proclamation declaring April Fair Housing Month in Kentucky.

In honor of Fair Housing Month, celebrated each April, HUD has declared 2010 a “Time to Act!”

The Kentucky Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in housing transactions based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, or familial status. The theme for this year’s Fair Housing Act recognition, “Fair Housing in 2010: Time to Act,” reflects the urgent need to ensure fair housing.

“Hud’s partners of the Fair Housing Assistance Program including the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights investigate more than 10,000 housing discrimination complaints annually,” said John J. Johnson, executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights. “We are determined to enforce the US and Kentucky Fair Housing acts to ensure housing providers comply with the law,” he said.

This month the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights and its Local Human Rights Commission partners located in towns and counties throughout the state will participate in a number of activities to promote every person’s right to live in the housing of his or her choice, free from discrimination.

People in Kentucky who believe they are the victims of housing discrimination should contact the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights at 1.800.292.5566.
