FEMA Brings Rebuilding Advice To Kentucky

FRANKFORT, KY – July 8, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Many Kentuckians are seeking ways to prevent losses from future flooding and severe storms. Over the past several weeks, more than 13,000 have stopped by to ask for advice and information at Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Education Outreach centers inside Lowe’s stores.

With the outreach centers closing in Somerset, London and Corbin, FEMA will open new centers Thursday, July 9, in Glasgow, Bardstown and Campbellsville.

FEMA advisors will continue in these locations through July 14 and will then move on to other areas.

They are providing guidance on such topics as cleaning up mold and mildew, storm and flood resistant building techniques, making mobile homes more storm worthy, retrofitting to avoid losses from severe weather, and flood insurance.

Applicants approved for U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loans to repair or replace a damaged structure may borrow additional funds for protective improvements (mitigation). The mitigation funds can equal up to 20 percent of the verified total damages for the purpose of paying for protective measures intended to prevent future losses from the same type of event that caused the damage.

Officials continue to urge anyone with disaster-related losses who has not yet registered for assistance to do so by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585. The phone numbers are staffed seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. until further notice.  Help in all languages is available. Anyone with Internet access may register at all times at www.DisasterAssistance.gov. The deadline to apply for assistance from FEMA is July 27.
